We are not fearless.

In light of recent pondering on the topic of fear, I decided to change this piece. I tore the word "fearless" off.

Fear is a natural and important aspect of our nature. It serves a purpose. It makes us aware of danger. It keeps us from doing foolish things and it keeps us safe. Being fearless could be dangerous. It could land us in trouble if we're not being careful.

So it's not about overcoming, defeating or eliminating fear. It is about discerning; when is fear protecting us and when is it hindering? When fear is hindering it is about making it a tool for growth.

"The obstacle becomes The Way" says Brian Johnson in a talk I listened to today.

Growth requires stepping outside our comfort zone, which creates fear. Which often makes us change our minds about growing. When fear hinders us we need to change our strategy. A wise man once said, "A thousand mile journey begins with one tiny step".

As counterproductive as it may sound, we have to actually learn to lower our expectations and approach our goals in tiny, doable, incremental steps. If it seems too scary we won't do it and are more likely to retreat back into our familiar comfort zone where we are safe.

It is about allowing ourselves to be a work in progress.
